100+ days as CEO: Interview with Thomas Schneider

We have asked Thomas Schneider, for more than 100 days as CEO of Digital Banking Switzerland, a few questions and what he is working on.

1. What projects have kept you busy in your first few weeks as CEO of Digital Banking Switzerland?

First it was important to me to speak to all employees, responsible persons and customers. Three topics emerged from these meetings: customer orientation, quality and the future positioning of our Digital Banking Hub. I am taking these three themes in hand.

2. What is your biggest challenge at present?

A great many opportunities are available to us, but we need to approach them correctly and prioritise. We must focus on the things that are important and have the courage to drop an idea sometimes and take one step after another.

3. How do you motivate your team?

My motto is: lead by example. Also, nothing motivates people more than responsibility and the opportunity to shape things.

4. You are allowed to pick a super colleague. What would he or she be like?

I don’t believe in the individual. We need teams with very different skills: visionaries, designers and effective implementers. These abilities are rarely combined in one person.

5. What visions do you have for Digital Banking?

Digital Banking will become even more important than it is today. Customer requirements will become ever greater with respect to convenience and security. A highly integrated platform with an open architecture will be expected, providing the simple integration of different – sometimes bank-external – offers. Time to market and open interfaces (APIs) are important success factors in this regard.

6. How do you relax after a demanding day?

Relaxation begins at the workplace. I start to think about the second half of the day during the first part, and I approach things calmly and steadily. This means that I am not always rushing through the day. Afterwards I take time out with friends and family.

7. What advice did you receive and follow at the start of your career?

While I was studying, one professor in particular impressed me with the following words: “There are not many new ideas or revolutionary changes that have not emerged already somewhere.” Making your way through the world with your eyes and ears open and then combining the right things will bring you success.

Thank you for answering our questions and allowing us to get to know you a little better.
